Phase 4 - Infinity's Interface: The Analysis

Incredible. This is Big!
Less than a day after the collaborative interface goes up it has 9 public artists and over a page of content.

I purposely wanted to put my phase 4 on the web to give it the advantage of being available to anyone at anytime. I can just sit back, and watch the piece seemingly make itself. most of my peers have had to spend time managing their project's flow of control from person to person.

Infinity's Interface can be found here.

Its has become very long and detailed. So heres a summary of the piece so far. hope you enjoy it.
Each new paragraph signifies a change in author.

The story starts off with a young boy digging through the rubble of his home. The story is set in a post apocalyptic world and told from a third-person perspective. The boy's mother was killed during the destruction of his house; cause by an evil force simply referred to as: "The Machines".

After crying over his mother's death, the boy begins to wonder the streets aimlessly. He encounters a small kitten looking for food.

The boy remorselessly devours the cat. He had not eaten in days. While eating the cat he reminisces about the past:
He remembers the news articles about secret government testing on household appliances, they had gone horrible wrong. One day his iPhone had crawled out of his pocket and attacked his family. He believes the machine murdered his parents after mortal wounding him.

Because of the attack doctors were forced to replace his limbs and a portion of his head with mechanized enhancements, supposedly to save his life. However, the boy now resembles a machine himself.

After eating the cat, he skips down a brook where he meets a small brown man named Pablo. Strangely, the two agree to work together to survive the threat of a mechanized apocalypse.

The story jumps and the boy is apparently staring into the eyes of the cat once more. Pablo is nowhere to be seen. He tries to eat the cat, but this time fails. The kitten bites his neck and the boy fall unconscious.

The boy awakes to find both Pablo and the cat at his side. Hilariously, this author decides to name the young boy "Marc". In a surprise twist, Pablo feeds Marc a battery while stating that Marc need to recharge. It is revealed that Marc is more machine than he thinks.

This new artist decides to explain the story's plot holes by stating that: Marc loses touch of reality when his energy level gets low. The strange cat from before is actually Marc's pet named Miko and neither of them ever tried to eat one another. Additionally, Pablo is a Mexican refugee who aids Marc in his quest to stop the Machines.

In the last part of the story to date, Marc can remember the truth behind his mother's death. He was the machine that killed his mother a long time ago, not his Iphone. This implies that Marc never did dig through the wreakage of his home earlier that day. Marc is shown as unstable and in constant self-conflict. He has difficulty coming to terms with the fact that he is just like the machines he dispises.

End for now...

Things to point out:
  • Its interesting to see the power struggle between artists. New events and revelations seem to rewrite history or render its accuracy questionable.
  • The part where the story jumps and the cat comes back was a mistae i believe. Two artists read the story at the same time then began typing. However artist 2's post envolves the cat that artist 1 moments before had killed off. I think such gliches in the system add to experiance. Its a by-product of this projects abilitiy to be worked on in deferred time.
  • No artist wants to break the mold and change the story into something new. Perhaps they believe doing so may hurt the project's collaborative nature.

I look forward to how this thing evolves...

Internet Social Phenomenon Final

With the course coming to a close, I decided to make my posts on Internet Social Phenomenon a 2 part series.

I wanted to focus this last one on Viral Videos and internet celebrities.
How can such uncanny characters create content able to spread faster than the deadliest disease?

While poking around the interesting world of York's Fine Arts and Cultural Studies homepage; I found a blog post on the Tactical Media Course page that conveys exactly my message:

It takes about Youtube celebrity "Pruane2Forever".
Tactical Media Blog

Alot of things stated in the Tactical Media blog can be related to this next one.
Lets talk about another one. A personal favorite: "Boxxy"

Urban Dictionary Describes Boxxy as:
A jittery camgirl whose constant eye movements, subject changing, and tonal variation gained her the adoration of Youtube, Gaia, and 4chan.

Its January 16th 2009. On Youtube, the user 'boxxybabee', has 21,800 subscribers, 1.4 million video views and over 38,000 comments on her videos and channel, yet she only signed up 8 days ago, and has only 3 videos. Many people were, and are confused. How did this happen?

I HIGHLY recommend reading as much as you can of The Boxxy Story.
Its long but outlines her rise and fall from by a faithful unbiased viewer from the very start. Such an accurate compilation of facts about her are hard to come by.

It would take too long to post an in depth analysis on both of them and their situations. I merely wanted to bring them to the attention of any readers wanting to know more about the kinds of things changing the electronic social landscape.

Presentation Slides

The current boundaries of the Internet
Slides have been summarized and transferred to my Blog for discussion.
Bolded texts are direct quotations from sources.

Topics Covered:

  • is the internet truly free
  • corporate takeovers
  • free speech

Is the internet truly free? Perhaps...
"The internet has become what it is because its what the people who use the internet want it to be. There was, for instance, no governing authority who handed down a rule that there should be weblogs. Users wanted a way to express themselves in whatever way and on whatever topic they chose, so the "Blogosphere" came into being. The internet as it exists was not drawn up as a master plan - it evolved. "

However..

Consider the question : "Is it free"?
Anyone who uses the internet pays a fee to their Internet Service Provider (ISP). However what about free speech? Can you say, read, go, copy whatever you want? Are we free?

The answer lies somewhere in between.
Like any service, we are told how much we can and cannot use. Our speeds are capped. Additionally our activity is monitored and tracked. One could call this a very limited freedom:

When talking about internet freedom, we should consider net neutrality.
Fundamentally, net neutrality is about equal access to the Internet.

"Network neutrality is the principle that Internet users should be in control of what content they view and what applications they use on the Internet. The Internet has operated according to this neutrality principle since its earliest days".

Net neutrality has allowed many companies to grow and become successful. However it is a well known fact that many internet carriers are willing to commercialize the net by forcing people to use certain sites and services by limiting / restricting everything else.

"Many internet activists believe broadband carriers should not be permitted to use their market power to discriminate against competing applications or content. Just as telephone companies are not permitted to tell consumers who they can call or what they can say, broadband carriers should not be allowed to use their market power to control activity online."

There are many videos explaining Net Neutrality, here is a useful one:

Corporate Takeovers:

One could also argue that we are not free on the internet because we need to subscribe and/or pay additional fees to access more features on the websites we use.

Consider corporate takeovers.
If say the company Google buys the rights to Youtube.com, then we could see a change in the kinds of features we can use, the kinds of ads we see and so forth..
Oh wait. that already happened.

What about when Facebook decided to change their terms of service? People had become concerned over what they were free to delete, and what would remain and be used for corporate gain.

Lets examine and discuss the following link:
"We Can Do Anything We Want With Your Content. Forever."

Also, this video sums up the controversy nicely in under 4 mins.

Moving on, lets consider who controls the internet.

Internet Control:
The current system through which Internet standards are set and domain names are handled, a process currently dominated by the United States, Canada, Europe and Japan. the richest and most technologically advanced countries have an advantage in managing the technology standards of the internet than those less advanced.
UN Internet Takeover

Can it truly be free to all if Internet standards are dominated by just a few countries?
END PRESENTATION WITH 20 MINS OF DISCUSSION

Phase 4 - Infinity's Interface

Without hesitation, I am proud to unveil my phase 4 project titled: "Infinity's Interface".

As we all know our phase 4 project outline has been changed. We were simply given 4 experiments in which we could choose to carry out. It wasn't long before my inbox was flooded with requests from my peers to "Just edit this picture okay?". Very monotonous indeed. It was then that I told myself that whatever I choose to do must be unique.

CONCEPTION:
While intrigued by the first project option, it was well over used. We were asked to created a networked art piece. The art was to travel from peer to peer while taking constant shifts from digital to analog. Meant to place emphasis on the middle ground between artists, the art undergoes a digital journey that is just as responsible for the works outcome as anything else. The following are the details of my variation:

DESCRIPTION:
Infinity's Interface. A webpage displaying an artistic piece (currently a story). After viewing the page, users are given the option to update the work with a text contribution. With a quick refresh of the browser, Infinity's Interface itself has changed. I am very pleased with its potential; let me explain further:

RELATION TO TOPICS DISCUSSED:
After viewing the piece, you will make up your own mind on what exactly it is, and then add to it accordingly. However your conclusions are heavily reliant on previous users, and what they have given you to work with. There are no rules, yet if it was a story, one may try to keep it a story. Characters, plot, setting and narrative structure all hang in the balance as a new artist takes over the piece. Its always changing. One could opt to insert a chunk of ASCII art, changing the very definition of the whole art work. Consider the shift in creative process if you were asked to add to a story that was once a picture. Additionally, how would you interpret something in a different language? What if it was written backwards? Would you contribute differently after seeing the name of the artist before you?

Each user is connected to the art and each other by the webpage's content. Adding content in deferred time while trying to decipher the ever changing definition of what the piece entails is a challenge im sure my peers will enjoy. Thanks for reading, please comment!

Technical Issues: *EDIT - ALL ISSUES FIXED!!*
This being my first attempt at implementing self taught PHP and Actionscript there are two very minor issues:
  • Authors names might not be added to a new separate line due to spacing issues.
  • Page layout will be distorted once Infinity's Interface has exceeded one page in content.
Enjoy.

Internet Social Phenomenon # 1

Enjoying the steady stream of content comming to RomaineSpot? This is just the start!

Do you use Twitter? Will you use Twitter?
The amount of twitter users seems to have exploded. Fueled through partnership, advertisement and the media;
more and more people are following their friends, family and celebrites on twitter.
Essantially, Twitter users "tweet". They update thier online status and let anyone thats interested know whats currently happening.
The majority of tweets are uploaded to the web via SMS (text messaging) allowing users to be on the go while they share this content.
To be honest im not surprised how popular its become. Who wouldn't want to get live updates about Britney Spears straight from the source?
Actually, Twittering is also known as a form of micro-blogging. If I were using Twitter instead of Blogspot I could update this blog using my phone anytime. Or
what about the possiblity to update the whole family about dinner plans in one quick text?

Twitter claims to be a "modern antidote to information overload". - Do you agree?

Im not going to give a critique on this topic until I introduce other social phenomenon that ive noticed. This will be done in future posts.Id like to critique them all once ive introduced and posted examples of each of them. For now, heres a very popular youtube video that explains the Twitter concept very well:

Look forward to more posts expanding on our analysis of Internet Social Phenomenon.

Phase 3 Debriefing

My phase 3 was executed very well. The product was two sounds that were deceptive in their origins. Many techniques were used to make it difficult for anyone to know what came from where.
In fact, traditional ideals of what "real" sounds like is what made it easy for listeners to get confused. Lets break it down:

DECEPTIVE TECHNIQUES:
1. "That sounds too good to be real" - Many people believe that recording a real life setting has a natural low-quality sound to it. The lack of static, background noise, and microphone taps sends the message that what they're listening to must be fake. This preconcived notion of "What real sounds like" was advantageous. Instead of simply holding the microphone into the air; a high-quality, pure audio recording of humpback whales in the wild was taken. It wasn't filled with static or background noise- yet it was real... How strange. Additionally, sound B purposely has that all the low quality features of a live capturing yet is deceptively constructed and fake.

2. "Whales just don't sound real" - Whats that? A creeky door? A small child blowing bubbles in his milk? A diseased alien!??..... It was a whale..... nuff said....

3. "A familiar sound MUST be real" - ofcourse, were all familar with the great Marc Couroux.
We should all be well accostomed to the sound of his voice. Many people also have the preconcieved notion that something must be fake if they can't identify it. Reversely, Something must be real if it sounds like something you've heard before; right? Well, sound B (the recording of our professor) was a fake. Listen again closely and one can see how it jumps around topics in a  confusing yet seemless way. Laszlo Moholy-nagy Helped create the telephone pictures of 1922. He was NOT "The creator of art practices and telecommunications". LOL

If you havent heard the clips yet then you kinda ruined the fun for yourself..
Nevertheless, here they are:
SOUND A / SOUND B

Phase 2 Debriefing

I wont spend too much time on this since It was extensively critiqued in class. Heres a reiteration of points brought up during the critique:

WALKTHROUGHT:
The video features a man set to represent us and our television viewing habits as a whole. As he quickly turns on the tv, the search for desirable content is renewed. Strangely, his television set and cable providers are having technical difficulties. Signals are getting crossed, programs are blending togather and our protaganist has little control. Whenever he changes the channel, it quickly changes back to something undesirable. Despite all this, his thirst for sustenance unwavers. As he struggles to flipps throught the channels he stumbles upon a world vision ad. Images that were once powerful and disturbing are merely shrugged off and ignored. The man then finds a music video called "Wipe Me Down" by the artists "Lil Boosie", "Webbie" and "Foxx". Entranced my the catchy beat, hot rhymes and beautiful women; the man's thirst is quenched and his attention lingers. All undesired content is now tolerated until the problem becomes too severe and the networks decide to display an error message instead of broken content.

DISCUSSION AFTER WATCHING:
1. "The Medium Is The Message" - How is it that this medium seemingly dwarfs the once powerful images held in the world vision ads?

2. "Differant messages, same Medium" - How do other mediums enhance/detract from the message?
Example: low-quality camera and shakey camera effects work better for horror films. Why?
Example: World vision ad making use of hollywood style narration including panning, dollies, zooms, slow motion caputure and more. Why?

3. "The IronGrip" - If you went McDonanlds they try to force you to eat a Big Mac when you asked for a salad would you give in? Definatly not. Yet, television and the internet are filled with undesirables: popups, viruses, spam and unavoidable ads. So why do we go back?

Interesting stuff? I thoght so.
These were the thoughts that my video was meant to provoke. I believe I was successful to a certain extent.
Why not try viewing the video again? Do you notice anything missed the first time through?:
